VegasmanMar 30, 01:04 PMAfter a bit of thought I think I'm siding with Apple... here's why:

The strongest argument I've read against the trademark is that 'App Store' is describing the very thing it actually is. Someone likened this to renaming 'Windows' to 'Operating System'.

However what isn't appreciated is that 'App' is in itself an abbreviation. It's debatable whether apple popularised it not but thats not the point. Basically it would be like renaming 'Windows' to 'Ope System'.

I'd argue that 'Ope System' could be trademarked whereas 'Operating System' couldn't...

Nice try. But "app" and "application" have been synonymous for more than a decade. They have always been used interchangeably. "Ope System" and "Operating System" have not been used interchangeably.

SuperCachetesApr 25, 06:24 AMThe simple fact is that I should not have to obey a 70mph speed limit if I don't want to. Why would I even bother driving a car that can hit 186mph (with the speed governor removed, with the governor top speed is 155mph) at 70 mph? A Ford Fiesta can hit those speeds, what's the point of fast cars if you're going to follow the speed limit in them?

kfscollApr 25, 06:06 PM...which is still a bottleneck.

So what's your point? You like moderetly better bottlenecks?

I'd rather eliminate them altogether.

You're a silly man. Almost any standard SATA-II 2.5" form-factor SSD is faster than a standard MBA blade SSD. And a SATA-III 6Gbps SSD vs. the MBA SSD? Forget it.

DVK916Sep 17, 08:23 PMok.. see, i never said TECHNICALLY it was crap. OK, so CDMA can have higher speed than 3G GSM. ITS A MOBILE PHONE. what the hell do you need 14mbps for?

a jet car that goes 300mph on a drag strip is NOT better than a Audi/Merc/BMW/Bentley/etc that only does 250mph, but can drive on a normal road.

for consumers, it (CDMA) is crap. you are so used to having to choose a phone based on what your carrier supports (or vice-versa) that you can't see how that is a problem. GSM (which uses a SIM card) offers so much more flexibility. hell. I can take my phone to any country with a GSM network, put in a sim card, and VOILA i am connected (not that i need to worry anyway, with vodafone global roaming)

WRONG GSM does NOT work in Japan. You can't go to any country and use it. Japan doesn't have GSM.

ccoulsonMar 30, 12:20 PMMicrosoft struck back ... saying "the compound noun 'app store' means simply 'store at which apps are offered for sale,' which is merely a definition of the thing itself--a generic characterization."

Therefore, the compound name "Microsoft" must simply be a soft thing that is becoming micro in relevance (and business ethics)...

SilentwaveJul 16, 02:01 AMThere is no way apple with go with Merom for the imac. One huge factor you are all ignoring, is price. Merom cost alot more than conroe for the same speed. Apple will try to lower cost, and that means going with Conroe.

It's a matter of heat. We can't be sure that they'll go Conroe if the actual heat put off by the chip (ignoring TDP quotes on either side) is much more than a G5.

I hope they use Conroe though- that would be fantastic.

But I honestly can't say that I think it will go conroe YET. It would be more likely when they have to redesign the Logic Board next year because Merom's 800MT/S FSB version will have a new socket and need the new Santa Rosa chipset. They'll be just as well off if they do a new LB at that point for Conroe.

It's very, very telling. MS is riding the coattails of their universal licensing racket while Apple keeps changing the face of consumer tech. This day was bound to come.

This is the post-PC era and we'll see MS in decline.

tyzillaSep 14, 10:38 PMNot sure why people would get excited about an iCamera. There are many excellent DSLRs out now from companies that have a lot more expertise in building cameras than Apple. I'd rather have a Canon Rebel XT or maybe that new Pentax.

by the looks of the description he/she gave of the "iCamera" or "iDSLR," it was a joke. that's just my take though.

w00masterNov 13, 03:44 PMPlease be more specific when you say "wrong", in what way?

Apple owns the rights to their intellectual property, this includes images and icons of their products that they have created.

Again, as I have said previously, the way these images/icons came about was USING OS X APIs.

That's how they're wrong.

longofestApr 22, 12:27 PMSo Apple's method could be more efficient their side, offering a spotify type model where everyone accesses the same iTunes purchased track (except this time they own it) instead of Amazon's where each indivdual track is stored in their "digital locker"?

A nice bt of foresight by Apple if so.

The All Things D article did a bit of speculation on whether or not it would be more efficient, and they got it wrong. Amazon (like many other enterprises) uses Data De-Duplication (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_deduplication) to minimize data duplication. I can guarantee they are using such technology for their cloud storage offering.

berkleeboy210Aug 31, 10:04 PMIf Apple is planning to introduce a video iPod and movie service on the 12th, might it makes sense to release updates of some products, such as the MBP, the previous week, giving the full spotlight to the new products. There really doesn't need to be a special press event for an updated laptop, even if it does have a new case (as I don't expect it to be too different). It would certainly give Apple lots of positive press about the updates and fuel even more talk about what was coming the following week.

Just my usual 2 worth....

Completely Agree. I think there were also rumors of releases on Sept. 5 so that could be for the laptops.

The complete refresh of the iBook (now macbook) line didn't get any media fanfare, so I don't see why an updated MBP should be any different.

just do a quiet press release on the website, and save the *new* products and download services for the press event.

Then if they wanted to at the event, just say that the majority of our computers now have the Core 2 Duo processors and were introduced last week, and have begun shipping today. or something to that effect

Wild-BillApr 30, 03:54 PMApple really needs to get on the SATA-3 bandwagon. There are already plenty of SSD choices that can utilize the higher throughput, and more drives are on the way.

Not to mention the fact that most motherboards out there today all have SATA-3 and have for a while now.

MultimediaAug 28, 06:57 PMCool find, but I dont much believe it completely. Just my thought... I just trust that Arstancia website (how ever it is spelled) They did a core 2 duo laptop review and got some performance increases of around 10-15% but never 22%...That's because they were using pre-production samples. Here's what was found with final release units over at PC Perspective (http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=288&type=expert&pid=1):

"We can now say without a doubt that Intel's latest mobile CPU has nailed the holy grail in mobile computing - it performs faster, consumes less power, and generates less heat. What else is there to say besides that?"

bokdolSep 12, 02:18 PM80GB iPod seems like the only model with good value/price ratio. :D The home sync feature is an especially nice touch, something people predicted since the 2G iPods.

what do you man by home sync... i missed lot of info. and i could not find anything on that...

mdntcallrSep 14, 09:33 AMyep i smell both the aperture update,

and hopefully the merom MBP, don't think that the macbook will be updated with merom, they need to differentiate their pro and consumer lines. also, by using the core duo chips in the macbook, perhaps they can lower the price by $100 as the cpu cost is coming down from intel with the new merom out.

jimmyjoemccrowJan 12, 01:10 AMAnd is the alleged attack proceeding through the Mac community? No.

Once again, targeting and successfully attacking are worlds apart.

Oh, and the "time" needed to identify that you're on an Apple (or other) operating system is essentially zero. All you have to do is look at the user agent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_agent) header.

Thanks for reminding me to put you on ignore. I know how easy it is to identify an operating system, but if they bothered to make a message just for Mac users it stands to reason they made malware for Mac users too. Or would they just make the message for fun? We all know what funny guys malware writers are.

It doesn't matter if it hasn't propagated, it never even would have happened in the past. The more malware attacks there are on the Mac, the greater the chance of one of them actually becoming a widespread nuisance.

EquitekApr 22, 12:23 PMAre there any Thuderbolt devices yet?

sigh... I haven't even seen cable adapters, I kinda expected a ThunderBolt to eSATA adapter quickly...

OneMammothMar 30, 01:21 PMI don't claim to know a thing about trademark law, but looking at this simply I find it difficult to understand how the term "Windows" can become a trademark but "App Store" cannot.

"Windows" is not the definition of the thing itself, as "App Store" ;)
