ErasmusJul 22, 03:59 AMI agree with your point on never saying a computer is too powerful, although living in computers is probably not going to happen. Sounds a bit too Matrix-like for me.

:D You never know, you never know.
Ye of little faith in technology!
Never mind.

I think its more along the lines of whether the public will let it happen without turning it into a big moral/ethical/religeous dilemma.
Well, anyway, I am going to stop, because this is way, way, way off topic. I shouldn't have brought it up to begin with.

jmsait19Aug 11, 11:17 AMIs it possible for Apple to release a phone sold in their stores that would work on all networks? Or have several versions of the phone that will work for Verizon, Cingular...

you mean sell an unlocked phone? that would be sweet. then the carrier couldn't cripple it. we would experience it as steve intended us to.

although they could get some kind of exclusive rights deal if they picked a carrier.

YamchaApr 19, 02:08 PMSorry about the caps but everyone should see this:

EVERYONE: THE PICTURE POSTED HERE IS STRAIGHT FUD. THE F700 WAS NOT ANNOUNCED AT CEBIT 2006! THIS IS A LIE!

Here are the phones they announced: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_at_cebit_2006-news-177.php

So, is it possible for a mod to get rid of this? It's trolling and FUD at its finest.

According to Wikipedia It was released in Feb before the iPhone was released..

daneoniAug 27, 07:34 PMNow. But how much have iMac prices changed since release? I don't think they have. They released the iMac and MBP lines around the same time Yonah was intro'ed, and the iMacs did not see any speed bumps or price changes that I know of. Therefore they should be able to implement similar pricing with Conroe @ 2.4GHz, just with a profit margin closer to the iMac release amounts.

Of course they could always go for the 2.13GHz version, which is less expensive, and still plenty faster than the existing 1.83 :)

20" iMac prices have reduced....at least in the UK

EricNauAug 17, 09:51 AMI think that these tests are poor regardless of the results. Testing is all based on evidence and I see none, just what they say are the results.

When you run a test you normally document the process for the test conditions. You don't just say Photoshop CS2 - MP aware actions, but which ones - why didn't they use the Photoshop test.

"For FCP 5, we rendered a 20 second HD clip we had imported and dropped into a sequence."

Does this mean they imported a 20 second clip into a sequence and had to render the clip before it would play with the rest of the sequence.

They basically used the render tools in the sequence menu. Why measure something like that.

I have a 13" ultimate of the current generation. The limiting factor for me is the graphics, not the processor. so going to sandy bridge with the intel 3000 would be a less appealing machine for my uses than the current model. It's really too bad the sandy bridge macs are tied to those garbage integrated graphics.

only the 13" mbp has integrated graphics, they are not quite as good as the 320m on older models or in the current mba, but they are much better than integrated graphics of the past. All other mbp models come with the integrated graphics as well as a discrete graphics processor.

Dr.GargoyleAug 11, 05:10 PMBut you're really forgetting 1 thing. International Trade Mark/patent law is a pain in the @$$!!! I wouldn't blame Apple for 1 min to keep it in the US for at least a test run. That way they should be able to keep the patent breaker-reverse engineers off their back for a least a little while (i.e. why copy something if you can't even use it anywhere other than where it's patent protected).

If the rest of the world would get a handle on international trademarking and patent protection I don't think we'd have this issue of different standards of EU vs USA...
 patent intrusion in europe??? Are you serious? Do you have any examples to verify your claims where a european company violated US patent law and this wasn't enforced by the european judicial system?

Digital SkunkMar 22, 01:05 PMCan I exchange my iPad 2 for this Playbook?

I really like the minimal app appearance of the Playbook compared to Apple's cluttered group of tens of thousands of applications.

Hopefully Apple will take a cue from that.

I too do hate the way iOS looks on the home screen. It wreaks of tacky 4 year old OS.

I might have to go back and edit my first comment to be clearer.

I can leave the OS behind, but it's the 3rd party apps that I long for on a tablet. It's too bad that these guys don't port their apps over toe Android.

+1

'lets make a tablet for our business users, to get serious workloads done. we can call it the playbook'.
i didn't know charlie sheen was in charge of their team?

Playbook . . . as in what sport coaches use to hold their plays . . . e.g. their next moves, their plans on winning the game.

netdogAug 11, 03:22 PMFirst, what makes you think the cellusage is similar to internet????? Mind blowing step here.
Secondly, Europa has 291 million internet users; North america US&Canada 227 milion; Rest of the world 500 million
Hence europe would be close to 30% of the total market???? What about india??? Japan??? china??? come on you cant say jack *** from this statistics

China, having bypassed installing a massive landline strucutre, now has enormous GSM network penetration.

India is also a HUGE GSM market.

savarSep 13, 02:35 PMNOT TRUE....The Quad core G5 people are in an uproar because Logic Pro only uses 2 cores on the G5....they updated Logic Pro so it uses 4 cores, but the G5 Quad still only uses 2 cores....there are also photoshop actions that are NOT multi core aware so will only run on one core.....Hopefully 10.5 will make all this irrelevant.

You totally missed my point. Even if an application uses only one thread at all times, that application is still a separate process from all of the other processes you have running. At any given time you'll have at least 30 something processes, even when no user-land applications are running. OS X will spread out those processes to try to utilize all the cores as much as possible.

In reality, there are probably not too many non-Apple applications which routinely use 8 threads or more. In the near future I expect all applications to use at least 2-3 threads, even the most simple ones.

Dr.GargoyleAug 11, 03:40 PMSo how many people in the world do you think have cell phones? Everyone?!?! Just doing a quick Google search, there were about 1.1billion cell users in the world in 2004. So, maybe it's up to 1.5 - 1.75bil now?

Now if there's ~700mil people in the EU with a workforce just under 400mil strong and internet usage is about 300mil. Ya, it would seem reasonable that roughly the same number of people use cell phones. Do you have a better estimate? I'm sure there's a lot of elderly, children, and poor in the 700mil that use cell phones, eh?

What about India, Japan, China? First of all, India and China have median incomes that are FAR less than the US or EU... so I doubt they have a relatively large cellular user base.

And oh, let me check with my cubemate.... yep, CDMA is used in parts of China.
Well, I dont know where to begin... I work in science and you have to trust me when I say that you can't deduct anything from the "facts" you have. You are guessing.
The fact is that GSM has 81% of the world market... and that makes cdma a small market.

budafiedApr 6, 10:49 AMThis may make my 13" MBP summer purchase change a bit...

It'd be a hard choice between a current i5 13" MBP and an i5 13" MBA, especially with that higher res screen and the SSD. The only problem is that it will be my only machine, so I'm not sure I can do just an Air for an extended period of time. The netbook-only setup I have now is pretty lame.

patrick0brienJul 20, 06:39 PMActually, that was my point, but now that you mention it, reversed hyperthreading would solve some problems.

In the long run (really long run, I'm talking quantumcomputers here) however, you are right, and innovation in computing will mostly come from software and how you tell the computer what to do. The nec-plus-ultra would be thinking of a result and getting it (or saying it to your computer) like a photoshop user going, well I would like the sun being more dominant in that picture, the power lines removed, and make those persons look younger. Boom. It happens.

-Macnoviz

Woah. Well, there's more than raw computing involved there, there is context for the computer to understand. What is the "sun" what does "Dominant" really mean? What are power lines? What does "remove" really mean? And let's not go into what kind of DB would be needed to describe all of the differences a person's face exhibits over a lifetime!

I'm sure we'll get there and such 'life' DB's built I hope there is a standard set! Who says we don't need this really big drives!

WillisJul 27, 02:19 PMThey didn't. Where is this Mhz myth you are talking about? They are downplaying the use of Mhz was the point I was making.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKF9GOE2q38

Anyone wanting to know about the Mhz myth shall find it there.

These new chips are to prove that the Mhz myth doesnt exist. Just by changing their arch. they can provide more performance with the same mhz, instead of increasing it (such as the Pentiums)

Imagine. If the Intel's were'nt annouced in January... we'd only have them for a month or two now instead of 7. Crazy.

Just goes to show the MBP's truely are designed for Merom

Parikh1234Aug 25, 02:57 PMI have had no luck today getting two batteries replaced. I enter their serial numbers and it tells me they are not valid serials, even though they fall within the range. When I call the support number and hit 5, i just get a busy tone and it hangs up on me.

RebootDApr 12, 04:49 PMThe truly sad part about this is going to be when Apple doesn't deliver on our rumored promises.

I REALLY HOPE that Apple does what that article says, and does it WELL, with no bugs or issues that render the entire system useless, within a price point that's reasonable ($1500 --> $2500 for what's described).

Otherwise, it's going to make whatever update we do get for FCP moot.

Well everything outside of no tape capture option. I don't have a professional rig for video so I guess that would mean sticking with CS5. (As in I don't own a capture card, just use FW)

dethmaShineApr 19, 02:50 PMI had a Casio Personal Diary in the late 80's that had the exact same grid.

Im not a troll either without Apple I wouldn't have a job.

Well, I am not saying apple invented the icon grid.

I am specifically pointing to the post where you say iOS's icon grid copies PalmOS. Back-tracing?

gnasher729Aug 27, 06:54 AMOK, that's wierd. Who would get angry about having research into what the public wants done for them???

No wonder Nintendo sucks so much.

BTW, Congrats on ur 500 Posts!

Very simple. What these companies are all afraid off: You think of some way to improve a Macintosh, or an iPod. You have the same idea as thousand other people, including the guys at Apple. You send the idea to them. They implement the idea - which they developed on their own, independent of what you sent them, and what thousand other people thought of. You see your idea implemented and promptly sue Apple for millions of dollars. The case ends up in front of a jury full of idiots who promptly take your side against the evil corporation and give you millions of dollars.

All that mess can easily be prevented by not accepting any ideas from people who are not paid by the company.

trogdor!Jul 14, 10:20 PMThe current powermac g5's have 1 16x PCI-E slot for the video card along with 2 - 4x and 1 - 8x PCI-E slots. Video cards are about the only thing right now that can even use all 16 lanes of the PCI-E bus. I am not saying future things wont, but thats how it currently stands.
