wizardSep 9, 11:38 AMSounds like a set of chips to me ;)

dave

There is no "Napa chipset". Like I said, Napa is a hardware-platfom, composed to CPU (Yonah), chipset (Intel Express 945) and WLAN ()Intel PRO/Wireless). The amount of RAM might be limited due to timing-issues and the like.

toddybodyApr 30, 10:55 PM1. Play doesn't mean it needs to be on max settings and max resolution, so I am correct the last 2 generation can run crisis and crisis 2 at minimum settings
at about a 1080p resolution, and minimum settings for crisis is still pretty amazing.

2. When you say "There is No Mac that can max crysis" .... are you excluding the 5870 mac pro?!

3. You are very similar to me.... however instead oh having a Mac and a Gaming PC rig, I have a gaming PC that is hackintoshed.

Let's agree to disagree about min settings being viable play;)

On your 5870 mention (which was a good card)...it's not going to allow max settings on that fancy cinema display (which I consider to be the staple of many pro owners...at least the ones I know personally). To me, a game should be played at native res, settings aside.

Not to distract from the original issue...Crysis is still a very relevant and great benchmark for current system test. BUT, last time I checked...this isn't a dictatorship:) stay well, glad to hear theres some hackintosh gamers out there in MR

Yeah I forgot about the Kinect. Maybe MSFT is finally breaking out of that rut.

ChundlesSep 1, 08:42 AMI'd say a refresh of the Mac Mini and/or iMac might happen. Why would they call both of the existing models 'early 2006' (esp. the mini) in this page.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303315

Because that's when they were released.

DHUKJul 14, 10:45 AMIf Apple put a proper desktop processor in the iMac, then I'll buy. I want desktop specs not laptop specs if it's going to sit on my desk.

ten-oak-druidMay 4, 11:10 AMToo bad the mac mini that works with this iMac doesn't exist. Nor does that tower you're speaking of.

????

Has nothing to do with my comment.

SquonkOct 27, 02:08 PMI'm all for protecting the environment, but sometimes it gets out of hand. Greenpeace should be there, but it is evident that Apple is already working on being more environmentally friendly. Greenpeace should have been kicked out for violating their contract.

+1 for Apple

Yep!

I've been putting off a new mac for YEARS! Gief Core Duo 2 iMacs!

airamericaOct 27, 11:11 AMI know the planet is doomed and that we are all going to drown under super high sea levels BUT I just can't see the point in groups like Greenpeace.

I mean, they bang on about this and that, looking for big companies to target. It just stinks... Have you seen that raft (boat) they sail around in - it is hardly a pin-up for ecological travel.

Greenpeace you are a product of the 20th Century, turning to ever more desperate methods to get your message out. Take your tree hugging ideology and put it to good use somewhere else - fight Aids, cure cancer, help the disabled etc.

Apple and it's partners or competitors crack on! Do your thing, if you can become 'green', go for it. If not, we're all doomed anyway!

moxxeyMar 22, 04:01 PMThere's pretty much no news in this news piece.

We know it's going to include Sandy Bridge and Thunderbolt. We know it's unlikely to be re-designed and we know it's going to be between now and May.

Where's the news here?

We need specs. Some CPU and other info, at least.

kevin.riversJul 14, 12:44 PMYeah, considering we get so many posts about "Will this RAM work?". It seems like the populous is clueless about DDR/DDR2 and FSB.

Exactly. Which is why the Ghz myth will stay for a long time. You can't market Memory or FSB or SATA or PCI-X/PCI-E, you won't get anywhere.

Ghz, GB, "X times faster", and you can play games that look very pretty. Those will be what computer marketing will be all about for many years to come.

ju5tin81Sep 14, 09:54 AMDefinitely need bigger HD's in the laptops now... 60 in the MB 80 in the MBP! Not really cutting it when there is a 80GB iPod!

Not just bigger discs but reasonable prices. The mini's apple upgrade 60-120GB costs 100 and on the MB it costs 180! How come? Don't they use the same disks?

Sorry, just ranting now... I'd just love to be able to buy a decent 'off the peg' machine that doesn't need upgrades....

I'm in the market for a new MB, doubtful at this next event, but hopefully soon! (and with a much bigger disk as standard):p

cubeApr 22, 11:48 AMAnd I'm honestly kind of impressed that the MacBook Pro still doesn't give you an option to buy one without a DVD drive; I have a 2011 MBP and I swear, it doesn't get any use whatsoever. Apple's obsession with using every square millimeter of space on a portable device apparently ends when it comes to optical disk drives on MBPs.

It doesn't happen because what they should really be putting is Blu-Ray.

wywern209Apr 30, 02:21 PMI understand where you are coming from. With your feet planted in set in concrete, unable to fathom future developments based on the experimental or high-end tech of the day, the Blu-Ray seems endlessly of value. Much like the tape reels of the 60s.

The BluRay is going away for one very specific reason: mechanical. By 2016 the flash memory chips for 50gb will probably be so everyday and cheap that bulky, mechanical BluRay will seem awkward. By 2019 I'd bet you can store several times more than a BluRay on medium-priced thumb-drive.

Proof? Look back 6 years when a 1gb thumb-drive was a huge chunk of cash. Look back 10 years when a 512MB thumb-drive was almost prohibitive to buy. The future is non-mechanical.

perhaps, don't take it the wrong way but when people buy machines today, they also intend to use it for all the days leading up to the point where you can get 1 TB flashdrives for a few bucks.

uv23Sep 4, 07:28 PMI predict a more powerful, larger storage, video iPod with a dock that has component/hdmi/whatever video and optical audio outs. No big deal. It's a natural progression from what's available today.

mdntcallrSep 15, 07:51 PMI think the iPhone is going to beat out G5 powerbooks for the most annoying front page rumor.

You are sooo right!!

of course if apple keeps us going with the merom laptops or holds out too long on blu-ray. those will come up close also.

ranReloadedApr 19, 11:08 AMI agree it's likely pointless for Apple to sue on this issue, but IMHO the lameness of all these me-toos is quite shocking. But law and personal opinion are two very different beasts.

jafdApr 25, 03:02 PMThose having glossy screens sure will need an automated screen wiper to go with their new laptops. They've got no touch screens and we take care to not touch them, but eventually the screens get dusted and/or fingerprinted all over.

Look at this iPad. Isn't it disgusting?

http://www.tema.ru/jjj/apple-2.jpg

Sure it's not how it looks in ads. It's a real thing in real use.

I also expect a screen wiper in iPad 3, by the way. Screw the liquid metal and gimme the ol' good wiper, please. Or make it matte/Pixel Qi, for heaven's sake.

Andras5soulApr 25, 02:36 PMHere's hoping my pre-unibody mbp lasts me until then!

freedevilNov 14, 12:31 PMBoo Hoo Rogue Amoeba. How stupid? Devs need to grow up.

jesteraverSep 10, 07:23 AMIt seems Apple could just wait for Clovertown...

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/02/11/intel_clovertown/

which appears to be 2 Woodcrests on one processor. Could we see 8-Core Mac Pros' in 2007?

arn

More than likely. It will come with a price probably.

cmaierNov 13, 05:49 PMI'm not missing the point. You are. They have a right to determine how their trademarks are to be used and if they did not vigourously defend them, you would see MSFT stealing even icons from OS X.

Apple is a company with a responsibility to shareholders. They are not your friends. Google is not your friend either.

The purpose of the image use is on a mac. You are also not looking at it from Apple's point of view that Apple wants to have the iPhone be a success regardless of whether the server used in a client server environment is running OS X, linux, some other unix or windows. If they were to allow some of their third party developer running OS X based services use their icons, the real client server developers running in the cloud would complain about favouritism. They have to keep third party developers under the same rules regardless of whether the app uses a mac based service or not.

You say you're not missing the point, but your response immediately jumped back to "they have a right."

yes, we know. We aren't arguing what they have a right to do.

We are arguing about how stupid and arbitrary it is to enforce that right.

And your argument about the icons in the last paragraph makes no sense - why would someone want to use an image of a mac to represent a non-OS X box?

And, you still haven't addressed the fact that there is no solution for the developer other than making their software significantly worse - they can't use their own icons that depict the machine being connected to, they can't necessarily use the NAME of the machine being connected to - what is it they are supposed to do? List the machines by ip address?
