If a friend of mine buys an expensive new car and it didn't suit my own personal taste, I would at least try and be polite about it and not belittle them by saying "what a pile of crap! you spent all that money on that piece of junk?" It's damn rude!

A friend of a friend of mine who once visited my apartment made a snide comment about my iMac. I immediately replied "your t-shirt makes you look fat and ugly", which was met by a very awkward moment of silence. I followed up by saying "don't be rude about my personal taste and I won't be rude about yours."
Needless to say he probably left thinking I'm some nutter who has an unhealthy relationship with my computer, but I'm glad I made the point.

But I do agree that a lot of it is just jealousy. I've known many people who were once very vocal about their hate for Apple and the iPhone, who have since become iPhone owners themselves and now love it.

And perhaps you could remind those who smirk that you've spent �500 on your phone that they too will likely be paying a similar amount for their smartphone over the course of their contract, but with an unlocked iPhone you also have the added benefit of being able to take advantage of much cheaper "sim only" tariffs which you're not locked in to.

I've gone back to Firefox (4) after using Safari and Chrome. Both seem to have this awful problem of lag when opening new pages on tabs (i.e. you click back to the page you were viewing while the new one loads and it just sits there; maybe it doesn't happen on dual-core processors, but it happens on this netbook with both Safari and Chrome (both Webkit based). Firefox4 doesn't have this problem. It may be slightly slower rendering a page, but I can do other things while it's rendering a new page whereas I just have to sit and wait with Safari and Chrome.

These naysayers have been moaning and groaning about iOS forever. They will continue to do so forever. In the meantime the rest of the world will get on with using some great software (many of it free) and getting a lot of things done.

Getting things done? The fanatics that worship Apple are too busy playing cheerleader for Apple and voting down the voices of logic on here to get ANYTHING done EVER. :p


I'm glad Apple is pushing things forward. The last thing I want to see is OS X stagnate.


But is has and IS stagnating. Apple is playing cutesy interface with this iOS merging and not much else. Where are the REAL features at like OpenGL4, display resolution independence, updated video drivers, a newer file system (like the ZFS that never came to be), format/write support for NTFS so I don't have to boot into Windows just to create a Windows compatible media drive, support for EXT3 (for the same reason with Linux drives and various NAS setups (e.g. Negear's USB UPnP runs many times faster with EXT3 than NTFS and doesn't support HFS period. How about a feature to NOT copy over '.files' when moving media files over to a Windows machine or putting songs on a USB stick (where car players will often trip over them)? These are FUNCTIONAL differences that would improve enjoyment of OSX and make it faster/better.

What good is an app launcher like iOS devices use on OSX? It's POINTLESS and worse yet intimates that it may be the future primary interface for OSX some day. Other than OpenGL3, I don't see much in the way of true 'OS' improvements in Lion. I see a bunch of smart phone crap that does very little to improve anything. Instead, it's starting to compete with itself.

i thought about doing this, and it wouldn't be very hard to do, but if something goes wrong, there's really nothing i can do remotely. the only things that seem to go wrong is the computer crashing, or restarting. either way, i don't have auto login, so i wouldn't be able to get to it remotely. heat isn't the problem right now (it was when i was trying 4.0 ghz - or 4 x gpu).
if the machines resboot then there is no problem with remote login. setup some sort of VNC server that opens once the machine starts up and away you go! i can do that to any of my machines from external sites - works a treat :D

my main 3 rigs (i need names!)

1. Asus - running 3.5 ghz i7 920. 2 x GTX 260 Slice?

2. Alienware - 3.6 ghz i7 920 now. 2 x GTX 260 Dice?

3. home built (need name) - 3.6 ghz i7 930 now. 1 x GTX 260, 1 x GTS 250. Sandy?

and i've got my ps3 folding and my macbook pro gpu folding right now, but not all the time

thats a hell of alot of power!!!!! atm i only have my i7 iMac - 4 cores, and crappy E4600 @2.4ghz lol. the PC has a 8500GT - can that be used in any way? it worked with BOINC when i used to do SETI. it was about 2x faster then my CPU haha.

zephxiiiDec 23, 08:57 AMi usually just read these and do not post, but i decided to finally register and join the action. i know the arguement against lte in the iphone for vzw, but i say why wouldnt they? they like to be on the cutting edge dont they? as to the arguement on the original being edge not 3g, there was no 3g android when the original iphone came out now android has a significant share of the smartphone market and they are coming out with lte devices at ces for verizon. why would apple wnat to be so far behind android phones in terms of lte and 3g. i think that if apple were to launch a lte phone in june, then why not just launch it in february? what is the difference in a few months when people will be buying up lte android phones in droves after CES

Apple usually isn't cutting edge. I mean why wasn't the first iPhone 3g when there was 3G in the US and EU? That and LTE chipsets are kinda new, voice isn't working over LTE yet. It would probably be easier and cheaper to just do CDMA (which Apple is already new at). LTE also might cause a negative effect on batt. life which Apple doesn't like etc. etc.

Remember all the reasons why the first iPhone didn't have 3g? something about chipsets not mature enough (i disagree), battery life (disagree), and I thought there was something about PCB space too but dunno.

Hell we haven't seen any job ads for LTE engineers either.

So no, it most likely will not have LTE, and there has not been any valid hints that it would either.

I met Peter Bohlin last year and we got to talking about his design strategies. He's been doing similar work throughout his career, even before BCJ (then Bohlin Powell) was founded in 1965. Check out Japanese architecture from the past 1,500 years.

As an architecture major and architectural history minor I find this comment to be Jobs-worship. Thinking that nobody else could come up with the concept of a simple and sophisticated design is just asinine.

My rant aside, I love the floor plan and can't wait to see some elevations/perspectives. Go BCJ!

Also, on a side note, BCJ is the firm that designed Bill Gates' house...

Exactly. Modern architecture has been about all of these ideals for years.

I really wish I didn't sound so cynical, but that's the picture as I understand it.

I think we have to start somewhere. Whether we like it or not, diesel/petroleum aren't going to last forever so sooner or later something has to change.

Obviously a lot of electricity is generated through non-renewable fuels now, and the distribution network isn't ready for cars to be able to recharge 'on journey'. But electric cars aren't a bad start. If a critical mass of electric cars is reached, it'll start to make business sense to develop charging stations (or stations with stocks of swappable cells?) on major routes.

If we wait for these charging stations to appear before starting to buy electric cars, we'll end up in a Catch 22. And (stating the obvious, but) electricity for the cars can be generated cleanly and renewably, even if it isn't at present.

You may be right about California & other parts of the US having power generation problems, and that may well hamper electric car adoption in those areas; but that shouldn't stop others from switching.

All IMO. :)

Seriously, the more I think about it, the more upset I am that they aren't offering one. I mean, what the heck are they goint to do with $10 billion? Even the most aggressive expansion and R&D strategy doesn't justify holding onto that. And it would be a great way to offset any damage from the options fiasco. And it would boost the shares 5% (at least) on announcement. They USED to pay a dividend (1987-1995). It's time to bring it back!

Nah, the guy who used to rent the house used to pawn a lot of stuff. The address was on file with several pawn shops in the area as his residence.
