Have people maybe stoped to think, that we may not get a new model this year? That the reason they are putting out the white model now, is to cover the fact we won't see a update till next year?

maflynnDec 22, 10:43 AMSome people obviously don't know the cost of staff downtime. Each day, how much longer does it take windows computer to boot up than a Mac? Minutes longer. Add that up over every single work day. Then add the anti-virus scans, annoying pop ups, etc.
I support PCs and servers in my job, along with Macs as we're a mixed shop.

I can say without a shadow of a doubt what you put down has little basis in reality. Yes, windows machines take longer to boot up, but not always because of the the antivirus software.

They take longer because IT (me and my co workers) we make sure that group policies are pushed out on every reboot, so the machines are fairly locked down. We also push out updates to software automatically and also yes do virus scans.

For IT to take macs serious, they will need to easily apply group policies to the computer remotely and automatically. Have applications available that allows them to update client applications.

The cost of such is generally to a degree that makes using macs not feasible.

btw, I get just as many calls regarding problems with macs as I do with PCs. In fact many enterprise applications have some major compatibility issues with Safari.

Total Cost of Ownership, up time, training support and efficiencies all point to using PCs over a Mac.

Just because apple fanboys say its cheaper in the long run means its true, quite the opposite. Asset depreciation of Macs is the same as PCs, so there's no financial incentive for a business to hold on to a mac longer then a PC, and actually its negative to hold on to an asset when its fully depreciated even if its still functional. This throws the idea that macs last longer out the door when dealing with business and depreciation

So why buy a computer that costs 2x more then another, has less ability to support/manage remotely. Has the same level of support required, i.e., support calls for users who need help, has some serious compatibility issues with some enterprise applications and also requires a fair amount of re-training for both the users and support staff.

Much AdoJan 10, 10:42 AMBah Humbug to all the unbelievers!

Apple know Vista's been coming for years, so they'll have Leopard ready. They've been working on the iPhone since before Tiger, so it's not like their R+D is suddenly going to drop in Mac development.

All of this 'what about the Mac' stuff is a little harsh. If Steve's got an Octo-Core Mac Pro coming in a few weeks, then he's not going to say so now.

Also, if Leopard isn't ready yet, and will be out in a few months, then not mentioning it is an awesome mind game. Bill gates was propbrably watching going "Uh...but- Vista and, err... what?"

Just have faith.

If nothing's changed in three months then quote me and pelt me with rotten fruit.

MA.

NothlitMar 25, 02:32 PMGoogle don't map the world either - they do the street map images, but if you look at Google Maps you'll see that the actual roads data comes from either Tele Atlas or Navteq. Those two companies sell their map sets to all the sat-nav companies too.

No need. Apple would just license the map data from either Navteq or Tele Atlas. The map data that Google uses at present is TeleAtlas (Especially for Europe).

Is this well-veiled sarcasm? If not, you guys are ridiculous.

1) Google does not own the mapping database they use
2) Even if they did, there are multiple geographic/mapping data providers
3) None of them obtained their data by having employees drive around in vehicles... That's an absurd suggestion

In the U.S., Google does own the map data (http://www.gpsreview.net/google-drops-tele-atlas/). For further confirmation, note that it says "Map data 2011 Google" in the footer when viewing U.S. maps, and says nothing whatsoever about TeleAtlas or Navteq (this is not the case for some other countries). They made this change back around October around the same time that the very first Google Maps Navigation app for Android was released.

Also, driving around (http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-9809094-1.html?tag=mncol;title) to collect map data is absurd?

Let's say I'm driving in my car through a city. Every 20 yards a huge window pops up blocking the view onto whatever I do (mostly Google Maps because I try to find my way) just to tell me there are 5 new Wifi Hotspots in my vivcinity and I have to close it while I'm driving. This is the reason why I have to constantly go to Settings/Wifi/Off and then switch Wifi on again later.

I agree with you that the current iOS notifications system is terrible. But you do know you can keep Wi-Fi on and just turn off "Ask to Join Networks", right?

revelatedJan 20, 11:16 PMFrankly I'm skeptical. I owned a 1999 Altima GXE with a manual transmition. Great great car for what it was. I'd still be driving it if some drunken moron in a truck hadn't totaled it. Anyways, my Altima was equipped with a different engine (KA24DE 4-cylinder, 2.4L) but was about the same size as your engine. It weighed slightly less, about 250lbs or so. Under normal driving conditions I could manage 30-31mpg combined cycle. On the highway, if I kept the speed down, I could do 35mpg (my best numbers were from a 360 mile trip @60mph - 39.5mpg). I had a 15.9 gallon tank, which meant I could get just about 500 miles on a tank of gas (I was brave once and drove 492 miles on one tank before I chickened out).

I don't know which year Altima you have, but you have a 20 gallon fuel tank and depending on what year, your EPA mileage is between 20-23 city and 27-32 highway. I'll grant you the 32mpg number because my Altima did better than the EPA numbers. 32mpg will get you 320 miles on half a tank. Heck, I'll even give you my best 39.5mpg number - but that still only gets you 395 miles on half a tank. In order to go 500 miles on half a tank of gas, you'd have to be getting 50mpg. And I don't believe that. I don't know of a single gasoline-powered car that can go 1000 miles on one full tank.

Here's the deal. You need to understand how gas burning really works. You also are not at liberty to speak on what is or is not possible on that trip without actually having driven it - as I have.

Mountains separate Phoenix and San Diego. Additionally, there is a long stretch where one can set cruise control at 80MPH, barely pushing the RPMs because it's in the highest gear. The mountains result in frequent instances of just coasting down, and with the exception of certain inclines, your acceleration is done by gas spurts rather than constant depressing of the accelerator. Less actual acceleration, less gas burned for the distance. Lower RPMs, less gas needed to propel the car. Use the car's momentum to keep it moving at a high speed without constant acceleration. Once I hit Arizona and the speed cameras and cops kicked in full force, I was limited to 65 MPH. That of course naturally increased my mileage since it took even less to move the car.

What I'm saying to you is that if one knows how to drive a car properly on freeways, you can hit mileage that exceeds what the car would normally be able to accomplish quite easily. It's city driving that drops that number significantly. Too many people are so hell bent on the numbers. The numbers don't mean jack in the real world and I don't know how many times I need to tell people that. The web is replete with stories of non-hybrid Altimas pushing 450+ miles. The key is how you drive, not the capacity of the tank or the rated MPG. It's the people who are lead footed that don't see the full potential of the car.

notromeelMar 31, 11:00 AMAs a Graphic Designer, when the iPad was announced, this was the first thing I wanted to see. But after experiencing the iPad for over a year, along with a desktop, I don't think this way of working with Photoshop will prove to be beneficial. Lightroom, probably more so.

Just keep it as a Photoshop Express and push the photo adjustment features. Messing with layers, blending modes and brushes I think should remain as features for a desktop for designing.

Lastly, this demo reminds me of JuxtaPoser, a quick two layer masking app.

thep33tApr 6, 02:00 PMOne thing to note is that this is 12PB of RAW storage. Raid it, add in hot-spares, take into account formatting, and you got yourself 8ish max usable.

decent amount, but not mind-blowing.
