feel free to point out how difficult it is to see any similarities...

Choosing icons that have taken on universal meanings and thus are similar, is quite a bit different from direct copying, of which we see none.

The closest ones in that group are probably the phones, and yet if you search for a phone icon on the web, or even on cell phone buttons, probably a quarter of them are slanted. Moreover, green is an extremely common color for the primary phone button, which is why Apple chose it themselves.

The use of rounded square icon backgrounds is a bit more damning, but still a style choice. Also, Apple's has a shadow and my Fascinate doesn't have the rounded square on most anyway.

Btw, I have noticed that Apple hasn't tried to claim ownership of the twirling wait symbol, but a lot of us were using that before they were.

I think Apple might have much better luck showing that the Galaxy phone shape greatly resembles the 3GS.

craig jonesSep 13, 12:58 PMArrays of cheap RAM on a PCIe card?

The RAM companies don't seem interested in making wodges of slow cheap hi-cap ram, only in bumping up the speed and upping the capacity. For the last 10 years, a stick of decent RAM has always been about 100/ $100 no matter what the capacity / flavour of the moment is.

Even slow RAM is still orders of magnitude faster than a HD, hence my point. There's various historical and technical factors as to why we have the current situation.

I've also looked at RAID implementations (I run a RAID5) but each RAID level has its own problems.

I've recently seen that single-user RAID3 might be one way forward for the desktop, but don't really know enough about it yet.

Slow RAM may be faster than hard disk but it's too slow for main memory. It could be useful for disk cache but products like that came and went. If such hardware could actually result in performance improvements to justify their costs then you'd see products that used them.

As for RAID 3, it has been used before but really has no place considering modern disk drives and workloads. RAID 3 and 4, in order to work properly, require spindle sync. Workstations have no business implementing any parity-based RAID scheme. Servers used RAID 5 when they have high capacity needs and aren't sensitive to write performance.

mkruckApr 6, 04:41 PMDon't understand that there needs to be a pissing contest about Xoom OR ipad.

Why are the Xoom guys even here on a Mac site, to tell us THEIR device is better?

Let's even assume they are right.
Go buy your Xoom and be happy if it does what you want No harm, no foul.

The Apple users buy Apple until something better comes along also as long as it does what they want.
They love the possible integration with their other devices and when that comes to Xoom or something else is better they will switch.

Technology pace is amazingly fast and nobody knows what is next.

Perhaps Xoom owners are on here because we own multiple devices and like all of them. Just because I'm using an Android device doesn't mean that I'm forever barred from reading and posting on a Mac forum.

Reading through the existing 8 pages, most of the Xoom owners aren't saying their device is better; rather, they're (we're) providing comments around what Android can do. To be quite honest, the defensive and snarky comments are coming from those that are not Xoom owners. Really makes me wonder why they are so defensive and strident, you know? Deflection? Insecurity? Projecting?

Yes, I'm being a smartass, no one needs to get their panties in a wad.

ReachSep 19, 09:44 AMI find your tone very condescending and doesn't encourage open and accepting dialogue between ppl here. I don't understand why you would participate then... If you need to be the oldest forum member (you win) or 100% right (you can win that too).... but I want to engage with ppl here in a friendly and warm atmosphere.
Agreed, he suddenly jump into the thread and started bashing everyone for making time pass until the machine we wait for arrives, quite unnecessary.
And to imply that chances for a RevB being more refined than a RevA is not higher is just plain stupid. Take evolution, things improve, bad stuff gets pulled out! ;)
Well, there are friendly people here, just some dicks needing to vent or something we could do without..

babyjSep 19, 10:14 AMI don't understand all the hype over the core 2 duo chip vs the core duo chip. They are basically the same chip. You will barely notice any difference with same speed core 2 duo over a same speed core duo.

Even when I've made big processor jumps before I've never noticed any increased performance that made a difference to me. Adding more RAM has made a massive difference though and probably would for a lot of people.

fastlane1588Jul 27, 11:52 PMso everyone keeps saying wwdc for all of the hardware releases....well seeing as how apple enjoys releasing stuff on tuesdays there happens to be a tuesday before wwdc. what if they just either quitely released everything or anounced everything that tuesday. that way they arent slow about releasing, and everyone will be set for when they talk about leopard and all the cool apps that they can run on their new machines,

this way they can also keep the focus of wwdc on the software instead of trying to squeeze new releases and software demos and all into one event......just a thought

spritelyjimMar 26, 12:06 PMI really don't see the point of a display anywhere near 300DPI for a desktop or laptop.

I'm a motion graphics designer, and I am constantly working in 1280x720 and 1920x1080. Which means if I want to look at what I do full-size, I no longer have any space on my screen. For editors and I, extra screens help, but what would also help, especially for those working on laptops, would be screens that can show full-size video without taking up all the screen real-estate.

EridenSep 19, 11:47 AMYou know, Sony and Nintendo are just *SO* behind the curve with next gen gaming systems.

Microsoft has had it's XBox 360 out for MONTHS, while Sony and Nintendo gamers are lagging behind, barely able to function on their PS2s and GameCubes.

If Sony and Nintendo don't release the PS3 and Wii, respectively, in the next week, they'll be the laughing stocks of the industry. There's no excuse for them to release their next gen gaming systems a year after their competitor.

epitaphicAug 18, 06:22 AMApps already capable of saturating 4 cores need more cores to run simultaneously without compromising speed. That is what has already happened. You were unaware of that fact. So yes, it is a whole different ballgame already.
http://images.anandtech.com/graphs/mac%20pro_081406100848/12798.png

I think this speaks for itself.

When I'm working on one project, that's all my attention to it. When I'd like to encode it, I'd like my however many cores to be at full blast. Sadly, that's not happening at the moment and will remain so until they rewrite h264 encoding.

Like I said, unless people are doing what you do (sending multiple files to be encoded at the same time all the time) they won't benefit from 4, 8, 100 cores.

Now if anyone can show benchmarks that show FCP being 40-50% faster on a quad than on a dual when working on a project, I'll shut up :)

Lord BlackadderMar 22, 12:48 PMThough, for what it's worth, I'd much rather we returned to the constitutional practice of getting approval from congress before committing ourselves to military intervention.

I agree with the sentiment, though I wonder how much difference it would make - Bush managed to lie, cheat and steal a vote out of congress in favor of the Iraq invasion. Plenty of congress members were either duped or cowed into voting in favor. It wasn't a declared war, it was even better - he had congressional sanction without being restrained by a declared war.

ArcusApr 25, 03:33 PMbecause as we know, there's no end to the absurd lengths people will declare their rights trod upon.

I do agree with you that this whole thing is a big 'ole waste of time and money, I would have appreciated it if Apple told me that this file existed. I certainly know they knew where I was at any given moment. I remember when old cell phones had the ability to turn off the 911 location option, I always turned mine on.

It would have been nice to know about the file and had the option to delete it if I want.

This is waaaayy overblown now.

cloudnineNov 28, 07:27 PM"It would be a nice idea."
What does that mean? I have lots of nice ideas for getting money when I didn't do anything.

By this logic, shouldn't Universal also get royalties for every CD player, Cassette player, and radio sold?

Might as well cash in on the giant cash cow that is the iPod

My thoughts exactly... "oh, well this ipod thing plays music and it's the best mp3 player out there... how can we get this to benefit us for absolutely no reason?"

asinine.

mdelvecchioMar 22, 01:00 PMLook at the specs, their greater or equal to the iPad 2 with the exception of battery life.

...you overlook that specs dont make the product -- quality and usefulness do.

treblahSep 19, 07:37 AMThese kinds of arguments are always lame.

1. People have lifes, not everyone is as much as a geek as you to know exactly how many transistors are in the next Intel processor. That is a code name by the way, Steve is not going to step up and go "Merom Macbook Pros!" on stage. He will look like a Moron.

2. So? Who is Apple to tell me how much of an improvement I should expect from something? When's the last time you seen Ford advertise "05 Ford Falcon! Fuel efficiency lags behind competing models by under 10%, same old reliable Ford Falcon with 2 year old design, still at same old price of $19,999"

If there is even so much as 0.001% of improvement you are gonna see Steve step up onto the keynote like a lappy dog and brag it to sound like it is greater than the 2nd coming of Jesus. That's sales 101 for you.

3. Meroms support 64 bit code. 64 bit code like Leopard (although we don't know for sure), or code like Vista x64 (that is 100% for sure). Sure, you might not mind running things in half arsed modes like some Frankinstein hybrid 32/64 bit system like Tiger is, but some people might actually *gasp* appreciate the ability to judge 64 bit code. Get off your high horse already, if you disagree just keep it to yourself. Not like your arrogant rants contributed anything either.

It's early but what the hay.

My post was not an argument. More of a joking preemption of the usual misspelling and disinformation that is usually spread during any Merom thread. So calm the ***** down.

1. Because Intel calls Conroe and Merom Core 2 Duo, it makes sense to call them by their codenames. Of course Steve isn't going to call it a Merom, and unless they have a new case design, I seriously doubt Steve will call it anything and just let a Tuesday morning PR do the talking.

2. I honestly have no clue as to what you are trying to convey here.

3. Wow, just wow. I'm going to break this down into subsections. a) What exactly do you think 'top to bottom' 64-bit means when Steve calls Leopard that? b) So in your opinion a Universal binary is a 'half-assed Frankenstein hybrid'? And Apple would be better off selling a x86 and a x64 version of Leopard? c) Pretty sure we've had this discussion before, correct me if I'm wrong, but please tell me again why having a "64-bit" processor in a enclosure that doesn't support >4GB of RAM is a big deal. I'll wait. Hint: Because 64 is higher than 32 and that means it's better is not the right answer.

Also, thanks for the laugh.

powers74Apr 10, 08:26 PMWhen this hits it's going to piss a lot of people off.

BJNYAug 23, 09:38 AMMy Quad G5 is silent as well, unlike Dual 2.7's which rev frequently.

I was concerned that the fans at the rear ports never spin, even during the Apple Hardware Test, but I've noticed that in other Quads as well. CPU temps are 50 to 60 degrees celcius.
Multimedia, would you confirm both with your Quad G5, please?
